However, in order for them to do this, they need to be properly maintained over time. Failure to properly maintain a wrought iron fence can reduce its lifespan by 20, 30, or even 40 years.

Tree and Hedge Trimming
One of the problems that owners of wrought iron fences encounter is the problem of overgrown trees and hedges. Vegetation that is in close proximity to wrought iron fences can either come crashing down on it (in the case of falling tree branches) or wrap around it (in the case of hedges).
Whereas falling branches can cause direct physical trauma to a wrought iron fence, causing it to bend, wrapping hedges can trap water against a wrought iron fence, causing it to rust prematurely.
To ensure that the vegetation in your yard doesn’t do any damage to your fence, it’s important to make sure that it’s trimmed with plenty of clearance at all times.
Cleaning
Another aspect of caring for a wrought iron fence is cleaning it on a regular basis. Cleaning your fence consistently will prevent the buildup of airborne residue, keeping the fence clean and preventing its paint from chipping away prematurely.
There are two aspects to wrought iron fence cleaning: scrubbing and waxing. Scrubbing involves using a mixture of dishwasher detergent and water to eliminate any existing residue. Waxing involves applying a commercial wax to the surface of the fence, helping to prevent future cosmetic issues such as bubbling and flaking.
It’s recommended that you clean your wrought iron fence every 6 months or so. At the very minimum, you should clean it once a year.
Removing Paint Bubbles
Over time, as wrought iron fences take on abuse from the many outdoor elements, their paint begins to bubble and flake. When this paint bubbles and flakes, it not only causes cosmetic imperfection, but it also causes premature rust.
Fortunately, there is a way to remove paint bubbles from a wrought iron fence. To do so, you will need a wire brush, a metal filler, and a primer.
First, sand down the affected area with the wire brush. Then, use the metal filler to fill the sanded area. After that has been done, apply the primer in order to prevent rusting in the future.
Repainting
The final aspect of wrought iron fence maintenance is repainting. This is not needed often, but only when rust has appeared. To paint over rust on your fence, you will need a grinder or sandpaper, a rust-resistant primer, and, of course, paint.
First, you’re going to need to sand out as much rust as possible. If the rust is just light, sandpaper should do the trick. However, if it’s thick, you’re probably going to need a grinder.
Next, you’re going to apply the primer. This is done with a simple paint brush.
Lastly, you will paint the fence using a roller, a paint brush, or a combination of the two entities.
